Stebon Primary School Bow Common, London

Client: Bouygues UK Ltd.
Completion: 2015
Architect: Rivington Street Studio Architects

Stebon new build primary school is the first London new build
school to achieve Passivhaus Certification. The project comprises
of refurbishment and expansion of the existing school and the
construction of a new 1200m2 teaching wing.

The new build scheme consisted of a timber frame superstructure
supported on a new 300mm deep raft slab. Passivhaus
requirements provided additional complexity to the design
due to the higher building quality and performances needed
for certification. Vibro-Stone compaction was used on the
existing stratum to improve the bearing capacity of the exiting
material beneath the raft slab, providing both a sustainable and
economical foundation for the project.

Extensive remodelling and structural column removals were also
undertaken on the existing building to create clear space for a
new school dining area.
