Harbour Street Footbridge, Mullingar

The Harbour Street footbridge project for Westmeath County Council. The footbridge is located immediately adjacent to Scanlon’s Bridge at Harbour Street, Mullingar, County Westmeath.

In this project it was considered a priority to preserve the views of the existing stone bridge. As a result of this the footbridge was designed to have a light and transparent structure, which would not distract from the existing stone bridge.

The resulting structure consists of a single circular hollow section arch spanning 16.5m between concrete abutments. The connections between hollow sections on the arch are devoid of unsightly bolted connections to add to the slender and simple appearance of the bridge.
